What Category Does Your Website Fall Into?

On a weekly basis, someone says to me:  “I really want to start a website but I wouldn’t know where to start.” Here is your opportunity to be one step ahead when it comes down to making your decision on what kind of site you’d like to start.

The first thing you must understand about the internet and websites, before you start your online venture, is what categories websites fall into.  Why do I need to know this before I start planning my web-venture? You may be asking yourself.  Well it’s simple: when you know what categories websites fall into it’ll help you decide which business is right for you.  Also, knowing the categories will help with narrowing in on your potential audience as well as speed your monetization process. So here are the Big 3:

1.  Traffic Drivers
Traffic drivers are actually the most common sites you’ll find on the web.  As for function traffic drivers are websites that drive traffic to a specific brick and mortar business or personality.  It’s pretty easy to see why these are the most common sites on the web after all it seems like nowadays every business and every other person you come across has their own website.  Businesses ranging from strip clubs to universities all have websites geared at driving traffic to their brick and mortar business.

2.  E-commerce
E-commerce sites are the second most common kind of site you’ll find on the web.  These are simple to understand in function, ecommerce sites are websites that sell either products or services of some kind.

3.  Traffic Sellers
While not the most common, traffic sellers are have the widest range of websites.  Basically a traffic seller is any website that sells its traffic in order to monetize itself.  Examples of traffic sellers are blogs, youtube, social networking sites, and blog talk radio.
While this is a simplistic way of categorizing websites it’s one that breaks down an ever growing and changing World Wide Web.  Remember your website is only limited by your creativity thus it can be a hybrid of any or all three categories and just like any other business all 3 forms of website are stakeholders with every other site on the web.
